Why people bother
Wet logs hiss, smoke, tar up your flue and give out half the heat you paid for. Properly dried hardwood lights first time and burns clean — which is the entire reason we pay to have it properly kiln dried rather than just selling what comes off the saw.
The short answer

These bands match the general guidance published by HETAS and most UK log merchants. Your own house, insulation and stove efficiency will move the number either way.
Getting compared like for like
More people get caught out by the measure than by the price. Here is what the words actually mean before you compare two quotes.
A loose cubic metre is logs tipped in, air gaps and all. A stacked cubic metre is the same space packed tight, so it holds noticeably more wood. Always ask which one a price refers to.
There is no legal standard size. A “bulk bag” can be anywhere from a third of a cubic metre to a full one, so a cheap bag can easily be the dearer wood.
Handy for topping up and for tight access, but the most expensive way to buy wood per cubic metre. Fine as a top-up, painful as a whole season.
Depending on log length and how tightly it is packed, a cubic metre holds somewhere around 200 to 300 logs. Ours are cut to 9–10 inches.
Roughly one square metre of floor at a metre high per cubic metre of logs. Two cubic metres takes about the footprint of a small wardrobe.
A loose cubic metre of kiln dried hardwood weighs somewhere near 350–400kg. Worth knowing before you plan to move it by hand.

Six things that change the number
A 5kW stove sips compared with a 10kW one. A modern Ecodesign stove gets far more heat from the same log than something twenty years old.
Open fires send most of the heat up the chimney. Plan on roughly three times the wood for the same warmth in the room.
Four hours on a Saturday is a different animal to a stove lit at eight in the morning and banked down at eleven at night.
Wet logs waste energy boiling off water. Under 20% moisture is the target — anything wetter and you burn more to get less.
Oak and beech are dense and burn long. Birch lights easily but goes quicker. A mixed hardwood load gives you both.
Insulation, ceiling height, draughts and which room the stove is in all move the figure more than people expect.
