Certified wood fuel
Our kiln dried logs carry the Ready to Burn mark under certificate WS7474/00001, and our kindling under WS7474/00002. Here is what that is, why it exists, and how to spot a supplier who does not have it.
Certified wood fuel
Ready to Burn certification gives customers a clear moisture standard when buying firewood in volumes under two cubic metres.
Certified firewood is measured at 20% moisture or below. Drier fuel lights more easily, produces useful heat sooner and reduces smoke and tar compared with wet wood.
Our kiln dried logs use Ready to Burn certificate WS7474/00001. Current certification details are also shown against applicable products.
Use the right fuel for your appliance, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and have the chimney or flue maintained regularly.
Why it is worth caring about
Wet logs spend their energy boiling off water before they can warm the room. Dry wood puts that energy into your house instead.
Unburnt moisture and smoke condense into tar in the chimney. That is the stuff that causes chimney fires and expensive sweeping.
Dry wood burns cleanly. Wet wood smoulders, and that smoke does not stay in your garden.
Anyone who has knelt in front of a stove with a firelighter and a bad temper knows the difference dry wood makes.
How to spot it
Two minutes of checking saves a winter of disappointing fires. This applies whoever you buy from, not just us.
The Ready to Burn logo should appear with a certificate number, like ours — WS7474/00002. A logo on its own with no number is worth very little.
Certified wood is 20% moisture or less. If a supplier will not put a number on it, or says “seasoned” without saying how dry, ask again.
Any decent merchant will happily meter-check a log in front of you. We do it on every load before anything is bagged.
Certification applies to wood fuel sold in smaller volumes. Larger loose loads can be sold before they are fully dry, with instructions to season them — which is exactly what our fresh cut and part seasoned logs are, and we say so plainly.

Seasoned wood is perfectly good fuel if you store it properly and let it finish drying. It simply is not the same thing as certified kiln dried, and we do not pretend otherwise.
